St. Charles Bulletin for October
6, 2002
27th Sunday in Ordinary Time
(This issue included a Ministries Fair
insert)

Dear St. Charles Parishioners:
The Kingdom will be given to a people that will produce its fruit."
The next two weekends will be devoted to welcome and involvement in
the life of the parish.
This weekend following the 5 o'clock Mass on Saturday, and the 6 PM
on Sunday, newly registered members are urged to come to the Cafeteria
for a reception, to meet staff, Parish Council members and priests. We
want all to feel a sense of belonging here. One of the best ways of feeling
a part of St. Charles is through participation in one of our ministries
or activities.
After all the Masses on the next weekend we will hold a Ministries
Fair. It will give you an opportunity to learn where you may best
use your gifts.
Welcome!
CONTEMPLATIVE WAY
Sessions: 2nd Tuesdays and /or third Mondays 7:30 PM in the Chapel. Come
and see.
"THANK YOU" MIDAS
Each Sunday, our neighbors at Midas provide several parking spaces for
parishioners during Masses. We greatly appreciate their assistance, especially
during this wonderful time of growth and prosperity. THANK YOU!
WE NEED YOUR HELP
As you can see, our construction efforts have begun! The fencing has been
placed around the circle entrance eliminating that entrance/exit to and
from the parking lot. The circle entrance to the Church has also been
closed; however, the doors on the Fairfax Drive side of the Church will
open for Mass. Please cooperate with our parking lot attendants and ushers
as they are trying to accommodate EVERYONE! We ask you for patience as
this effort continues. We are also asking for volunteers to help direct
traffic in the parking lot. Please call Marvin Mayorga at the Parish Office.
Thank you!

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
WAGING PEACE
On October 13th from 2:30 to 7 PM, Arlington United Methodist Church on
South Glebe Rd. hosts the Bishop's Summit on Children and Violence. In
"waging peace," we must take on gang and teen violence, whether
urban and suburban. Many have forgotten the post-Columbia need to reduce
the impact of violence on children. They can learn to be strong without
being trained to be violent! The Bishops' summit will include 9 workshops
to choose from, and a keynote address by "Lost Boys" author
James Garbarino. Registration is $15: grab a form at the entrance, or
online at www.novaumc.org/dev/arldhomea.htm. call 800-768-6040 for more
info.
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Our thanks to Larry F. Craven for his support.
RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
For a repentance from deceit and a love for the truth: that all Catholics
might defend the sacred gift of life every day of their lives; We pray
to the Lord:
ADULT FAITH FORMATION
The Monday Night Series continues on October 7, with guest lecturer, Joseph
Atkinson, Assistant Professor of Sacred Scripture and Pastoral Theology
at the John Paul II Institute, who will address how the Post-Vatican II
Church sees itself in the modern world and how the people of God should
understand their personal mission within this context. Join other adults
at 7:30 PM in the Church for this lecture which coincides with the 40th
Anniversary of the opening of Vatican II.
YOUTH
Workcamp 2003 registration has begun! This year's crew of high school
students will travel to Racine, Wisconsin from June 22-28, for a week
of outreach to those on fixed incomes whose homes desperately need repairs.
Consider answering Christ's call to serve others and be a part of the
2003 Workcamp crew. Commitment forms are available at Church entrances.
Questions? Contact Anne Marie at 703-527-5500 or amkatstc@starpower.net.
OKTOBERFEST
OKTOBERFEST IS ONLY 2 WEEKS AWAY! Please plan to attend on October 19th
for a day full of food, entertainment, games, crafts, and especially FUN!
This year we will have the ever popular Sister Benedict BBQ and the addition
of Latin American and Philippine food. We have been receiving a lot of
raffle tickets. If you are able to sell more tickets please pick up more
at the Parish or School Office. As you are doing your fall cleaning, please
set aside items for the Yard Sale. We will be accepting items after Masses
at the Youth Center on October 13th and October 14th-17th from 5-8 PM.
We are looking for people to help sort items for the yard sale and load
the truck. The Krafthaus is looking for crafts to sell, especially handmade
items. The Silent Auction is continuing to accept donations. Donation
forms are in the back of the church. Last year was a banner year for volunteers
at Oktoberfest. We would love to have those of you that helped last year
back again. We need volunteers for the Spaghetti Dinner, Bake Sale, Krafthaus,
Sister Benedict BBQ and the Soda Booth. The Oktoberfest volunteer opportunity
is also a fun way for teenagers to fulfill their required volunteer hours
for confirmation and school. Please contact Mike or Sabra Flaherty at
703-920-2689 or email at oktoberfest@stcharleschurch.org. "Feel The
Spirit"!
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
St. Charles School Extended Day is in need of Arts and Crafts Supplies.
If you would like to donate any of these items, please drop them off to
Jenny Roque or Christine Lee Tanedo at the School Cafeteria. Thank You!
