St. Charles Bulletin for August 25, 2002

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
[Including flyer for Sept. 11 event and groundbreaking event letter

from the pastor...

Dear St. Charles Parishioners:

"Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain." This weekend [changed to September 7 after the bulletin went to press] we break ground for our long awaited Parish Community Center. On August the 13th, I received a letter from Bishop Loverde stating;

"I certainly endorse moving forward with a contractual arrangement with that firm (Dietze Construction Company). Also, by means of this letter I formaly authorize a DIAL loan in the amount of $1,515,000 to assist in the parish's financing of the Parish Center. This loan shall be repayable over a seven year amortization schedule. I know that arriving at this stage has necessitated a great deal of effort and perseverance on your part, and I commend you and your parishioners for reaching this important moment in the life of the parish. Please know that I shall continue to keep you and your family in my prayers as this project progresses."

This milestone has been reached because of the spiritual leadership of Sr. Benedict, the Parish Center Committee and the Build the Spirit Campaign Committee. However, seccess has depended on the individual sacrifice of each of you. We will continue our tangible support through the second collection during the first weekend of each month and through the continuing pledge program.

Frs. Jocelyn and Marquis will be with us next weekend. We will tithe to Haiti and we will also have an opportunity to sponsor children's education and nutrition programs.
Rev. Gerry Creedon
P.S. Thank you for your continuing prayers for my mother.

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
SUPPORT ARLINGTON FOOD ASSISTANCE CENTER (AFAC)! In the wake of September 11, overall donations to AFAC have declined. They are finding themselves in desperate need for non-perishable items (vegetables, soup, rice, beans, pasta & sauces) with no major food drive scheduled until November. Please consider donating directly to AFAC at 2708 S. Nelson Street between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM; Monday through Friday. For more information, please call 703-845-8486.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
Older people are a special presence of God among us. This is so, not only because old age brings wisdom, (it does not always do so), but because the twilight of life is a time of extreme refinement. The spirit becomes humble. There are fewer idols. False illusions and false promises crumble and this enables older people to become more perceptive. Old age can be a very dark hour, but for this very reason, it can also be the eve that ushers in life's Eternal Dawn.
