St. Charles Bulletin for June 23,
2002
12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Our Bishops took a major step forward at
Dallas toward the protection of children and yet left many questions unanswered.
Next Sunday after the 6 PM Mass, I will lead a "Dialogue on the outcome
of the Dallas Meeting". Come with your questions and perspectives.
Only through discussion and shared faith will we find the path that renews
our beloved church.
Come and join our neighbors on the 23rd
and 29th events. Join me at "Music for Moms"
to support Borromeo Housing as it expands
its services to young struggling mothers and their children. This is a
practical way for us to put our concern for the protection of children
into action!
and at the same time, enjoy good music and my father's
fiddle!
I join the Social
Justice Committee in appreciating Bernardo Vasquez for his leadership
over the past year and offer him and his family every blessing for the
future.
A big thank you for the many expressions
of good will I received on my 34th anniversary.

NEIGHBORHOOD A & B EVENT

neighborhood A/B friends at our annual Wine & Cheese Party. This year's

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO SUPPORT ALTERNATIVES TO THE DEATH PENALTY
A series of bills in the 2001 and 2002 General Assemblies paved the way
for an exception to Virginia's 21-day rule with regard to DNA evidence.
The 21-day rule negates the right of a prisoner on death row to introduce
new exculpatory evidence 21 days after sentencing. While the legislation
lays down the procedure, it will go into effect only if a constitutional
amendment providing for it is passed in the form of a referendum the Fall
2002. If you are interested in working on a campaign to assure this referendum
is passed and/or alternative to the death penalty issues, please contact
Ross Connealy at 703-243-0895 or roloconn@aol.com; or Gail Goodridge at
703-271-9436 or gg2@erols.com. Thank you.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
Widespread
acceptance of cloning would be a deathblow to the sanctity/equality
of life ethic - the cornerstone of Western liberty from which sprang
our unrealized dream of universal human rights. The premise of the sanctity
of life ethic is that each and every one of us is of equal, incalculable,
moral worth. Whatever our race, sex, ethnicity, stature, health, disability,
age, beauty or cognitive capacity we are all full moral equals within
the human community - there is no "them," only us.
- Wesley J. Smith, "Cloning Reality," National
Review, May 3, 2002
MUSIC FOR MOMS VI
Today, June 23rd, is the big day! Our concert fund-raiser for Borromeo
Housing is at the Clarendon Grill from 6 to 9 PM. Although the concert
is free, we suggest a donation of $10. Beat the rush at the door by getting
tickets after Mass. Enjoy an evening of great music by Monica Perz-Waddington,
Father Gerry, and a host of talented musicians while helping BHI's transitional
housing program for homeless mothers. For more information go to www.stcharleschurch.org
and click on the Music for Moms link. Any questions? Call Nick at 703-276-2711.
Hope to see you tonight!
WEBSITE CELEBRATES 4TH ANNIVERSARY WITH FAVORABLE POLL RATING
The recent online poll about the parish website, www.stcharleschurch.org,
shows that parishioners are satisfied overall with the site as it celebrates
its 4th anniversary. About 65% of respondents said they almost always
find what they're looking for, while 35% said "in most cases."
None reported "in some cases" or "rarely." Most respondents
check the site weekly (60%), followed by those who said monthly (17%),
or daily (13%). The most popular features were news & headlines, the
celebrant's schedule, and homilies. Areas for improvement include a search
engine, site map, and updated information for all ministries, which you
will see later this summer. Look for the complete poll results later this
month.
