St. Charles Bulletin for June 2,
2002
Corpus Christi

Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
The Feast of Corpus Christi.
"Become what you receive," says St. Augustine. This weekend
we celebrate our deepest identity as a believing people: we are called
to be the body of Christ in the world. That is the purpose and meaning
of the Eucharist.
When the media deal with "The Church", they refer most often
to the hierarchial or clerical dimensions. While the organizational aspect
has often been seen as an esssential element, especially of Catholicism,
we forget to our peril the foundational reality, our church is an outward
expression of our spiritual communion with Jesus.
I thank the many parishioners who have provided me at time of writing
with 30 pages of very helpful comment and analysis on the issue of sexual
abuse. I will share these thoughts, as well as others I still await, with
Bishop Loverde. I also hope to provide you my compilation of these ideas
for your reflection.
Since we are the Body of Christ, we need to heal our wounds together
drawing on the resources and wisdom of all God's people.
Come and visit with your neighbors and with me at our upcoming neighborhood
gatherings.
In and with Christ,
P.S. The children of our Latin American Community will receive First
Holy Communion today. Let us pray for them, for their parents and for
the dedicated team of Catechists who helped to prepare them.
FROM VIOLENCE TO WHOLENESS
An eight-part series on the spirituality and practice of active nonviolence,
will begin Tuesday evening, June 4th in the Upper Room at St. Charles,
at 7 PM. The series will continue until July 23, facilitated by Micheline
Toussaint and Judith Kelly. Please call Micheline at 703-734-8549 or Judith
Kelly at 703-536-3564 to register. Workbooks are $15.00.
MUSIC FOR MOMS CONCERT
What do you get when you put together good music and a good cause? Music
for moms! Our concert fundraiser for Borromeo Housing (BHI), a transitional
housing program for homeless women and their children, returns for its
sixth year. It will be held at the Clarendon Grill on Sunday June 23rd.
The concert is free though a $10 per person donation is suggested with
the proceeds going to BHI. Come hear Father Gerry, Monica Perz-Waddington,
and other local musicians sing their hearts out. Call Nick Baric at 703-276-2711

LISTENING WITH THE HEART
Are you feeling moved to pray with fewer words, to sit in silence with
God? Contemplative prayer has been described as waiting upon God or opening
ourselves to God. In your busy, noisy world, come find some silent spaciousness.
Perhaps you will find that you bring some peace back into your everyday
life. Meet at St. Charles Chapel from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM beginning June
5, 12, 19, and 26. These sessions will be led by Jean Sweeney and Lori
Marie Croskey with the hope of fostering contemplative prayer in the Christian
tradition monthly. We invite other denominations to join us. Call Jean
703-527-5500 x15, or 703-841-8728 for information or to register.
NEXT WEEK'S 2nd COLLECTION
Next week's 2nd Collection is for Catholic Communications Campaign, which
is the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishop's program to produce and support
media projects that promote Gospel values and bring the Catholic Church's
message to the marketplace.
VACATIONING? Your parish bills don't! Remember your Sunday envelope.
(Bonus announcement that was excluded from the printed bulletin without
an explanation...for the second time in the past few weeks.)
WEBSITE CELEBRATES 4TH ANNIVERSARY WITH FAVORABLE POLL RATINGS
The recent online poll about the parish website, www.stcharleschurch.org,
shows that parishioners are satisfied overall with the site as it celebrates
its 4th anniversary. About 65% of respondents said they almost always
find what they're looking for, while 35% said "in most cases."
None reported "in some cases" or "rarely." Most respondents
check the site weekly (60%), followed by those who said monthly (17%)
or daily (13%). The most popular features were news & headlines, the
celebrant's schedule, and homilies. Areas for improvement include a search
engine and site map, which the Web Team will bring to you this summer.
Look for a report of the complete poll results later this month.
