St. Charles Bulletin for May 19,
2002
Pentecost

Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
"There are a variety of gifts, but the same Spirit." This
description of Pentecost could well be used of St. Charles.
Our ministries are varied: liturgy, social justice, hospitality, stewardship
(finance and facilities), community life (includes groups such as C'YA),
and neighborhoods. Jim and Genie Murphy
have led our Parish Council over the past two years and have worked closely
with me to foster these diverse ministries while focussing on our overall
mission to evangelize. I thank them for their leadership. Carolyn Gretzinger
will succed them for the next term as incoming President.
With our Pastoral Team and other staff, she will assist me in unifying
and guiding our efforts. Our parish is also blessed in our many cultures.
Our Latin American Community brings together a wide variety of members
who hail from many countries from Latin American and the Carribean.
Our Phillipine Mission Project reaches out to the health needs of their
home country and gives visibility to our Asiatic members, while our Haiti
Committee strengthens ou sister relationship with the people of Cavaillon
and Gross Marin.
May the new Community Center that we hope to build lay a foundation
for this vibrant and varied parish for the Millenium!
"Build the Spirit!"
BIKE COLLECTION
Pedals for Progress requests a donation of $10.00 along with each bicycle
to help defray the average collection and shipping cost of $25.00 per
bike. All donations are, of course, tax deductible and a receipt will
be provided for that purpose. St. Charles Church is jointly sponsoring
a collection of serviceable bicycles for "Pedals for Progress"
in cooperation with a number of other local Churches. The collection will
take place on Saturday, June 1st 2002, from 9 AM to 1 PM in the Mt. Olivet
parking lot located at the intersection of North Glebe Road and 16th Street.
Pedals for Progress will put that bicycle you have, that isn't being used
and taking up space, to very good use. Pedals for Progress is a non-profit
charity organization.

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS

with emergency needs. Through this special fund, St. Charles offers assistance
to local residents. Most often, people need help paying rent and medical
expenses. Please consider making a special donation to Project Lazarus.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Checks should be made payable to St.
Charles and designated for Project Lazarus. Thank you!
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Our thanks to ARLINGTON AUTOCARE for there support.
RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
For those who have grown very old, and especially for all who are alone
or afraid, that Christ might lead us to them and teach us to gently cherish
their lives; We pray to the Lord.
YOUTH ARE PRAISED
Congratulations to the "Youth," (some young and some not so
young), of our Parish. If you missed Cabaret on Saturday, May 9th, you
missed a night to remember. What a wholesome good way to use the gifts
God has given you! What a nice way for all of you to spend your time together
in practice and fun to improve and to share your talents. Also, using
your gifts to raised funds for your summer camp aide to the needy in North
Carolina is admirable. Thank you so much!
CHEERS TO HAITI HELPERS
The Haiti Committee wishes to thank all of the St. Charles parishioners
who participated in the Haiti Festival and helped us raise over $400 for
our sister parishes in Gros Marin and Cavaillon. Thanks also go to Norma,
who transported the Haiti choir, kitchen director Fran and Olga for her
scrumptious cake. The Lenten Rice Bowl collection also yielded $3,025
for the Haiti school lunch program, the Soup Supper contributed $1,056
and the St. Charles students collected $620. A bake sale organized by
Arlene with the Sunday school kids raised $565 for the lunch program.
Thank you one and all for your tremendous generosity.

LISTENING WITH THE HEART
Are you feeling moved to pray with fewer words, to sit in silence with
God? Contemplative prayer has been described as waiting upon God or opening
ourselves to God. In your busy, noisy world, come find some silent spaciousness.
Perhaps you will find that you bring some peace back into your everyday
life. Meet at St. Charles Chapel from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM beginning June
5, 12, 19, and 26. These sessions will be led by Jean Sweeney and Lori
Marie Croskey with the hope of fostering contemplative prayer in the Christian
tradition monthly. We invite other denominations to join us. Call Jean
703-527-5500 x15, or 703-841-8728 for information or to register.
