Parish Sunday Bulletins

St. Charles Bulletin for April 28, 2002

5th Sunday of Easter

from the pastor...

Dear St. Charles Parishioners,

"Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house."

This weekend, we celebrate 80 years of service by the sisters of St. Benedict to the people of St. Charles. Our own Sister Benedict is our best witness to the spirit of her Order and its motto: "ora et labora". Her work over the past 29 years for the children, their parents and their teachers is a testament to the generosity and faith that we treasure. It is her hope and mine that this historic year will see the construction of our Parish Community Center and gym. Let the bricks and stones evidence the dedication and hard work that have been the foundation of this spirit-filled community.

I salute the 45 young people who received the Spirit through Confirmation on the 17th. May their spiritual gifts be living stones as we build a stronger youth ministry in the years to come.

Join us for the Haiti Festival on May 4. We give thanks for the great outporing of love during Lent to the children of Cavaillon and Gros Marin. Through a quarter of the Rice Bowl offerings, $2,225.00 (25% of the extraordinary sum of $8,900.00 donated to hunger), Soup Suppers that generated $1,676.00 and St. Charles School children who gave $620.00, the parish donated a total of $4,521.00 that will be sent to assist the school nutrition program in our sister parishes.

Remember the Second Collection next Sunday will support our Capital Campaign to build our new facilities.

Peace,

Rev. Gerry Creedon

BISHOP'S LENTEN APPEAL (BLA)
We have each been blessed in many different ways. As we work to close out this year's BLA, please consider the gifts you have received from our Lord. Could you make a Sacrifice in Thanksgiving to support the BLA this year? Thank you to those who have and will respond to this important need.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!
Are you a retired Accountant or Bookkeeper looking for something to do on Monday mornings? The Parish Office needs you! With the wonderful increase in attendance to our Sunday Masses, we find that our collections have also wonderfully increased. We are in need of additional volunteers to help count the collection on Monday mornings. If you are able to help, please contact Fr. Gerry or Tricia at the Parish Office.

PROJECT LAZARUS FOOD PANTRY
Our food pantry needs replenishing ASAP! Please bring non-perishable items to the Parish Office. PARISH COMMUNITY CENTER NEWS
The Parish Community Center Committee recently held its monthly meeting. Key project developments are as follows:
Having received approval from the Bishop, the Committee is now ready to launch the construction-bidding phase. Mr. Moon Kim of the Diocesan Office of Construction Management, who attended our April meeting, outlined the process. The first step is the selection of the general contractor. Using the Diocesan list of approved contractors, Mr. Kim will telephone approximately eight contractors to ascertain their interest in bidding on the project. Of these, usually four to five contractors agree to submit a bid. The bid preparation stage (usually four weeks) culminates with the "bid opening," which takes places at the Diocesan Office of Construction Management. Each contractor's bid is read aloud in the presence of all bidders. After the Diocesan Office of Construction Management, MTFA Architecture, Fr. Creedon and the Parish Community Center Committee come to agreement on pricing and the Bishop gives final approval for a loan, the winning bid is announced. Groundbreaking, which usually takes place two to three weeks after the bid is awarded, is now projected for midsummer.
MTFA Architecture reported that our project had received approval from Arlington County's Zoning and Food Service Departments. The Mechanical/Electrical Department offered several recommendations on our plans, and the architects are working now to incorporate these suggestions. Responses from the Building, Fire, Plumbing and Public Works Departments are pending but expected shortly.
A landscaping subcommittee, comprised of volunteers with expertise in landscaping/gardening, was formed to make recommendations on the tree types that will be planted on our site.
The Committee reached consensus on the majority of interior finishes, including carpeting, tile hallway flooring, and paint, Decisions on the flooring for the gym and social hall are still pending.
