St. Charles Bulletin for February 24, 2002
2nd Sunday of Lent

Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
"His clothes became white as light."
This weekend, we celebrate the
transfiguration of Jesus. We are given a glimpse
of his glory, an anticipation of resurrection.
There is a church in the neighborhood that
advertises itself as a "positively thinking
church"! Every church that claims allegiance to
the story of Jesus' death and resurrection may
claim that title. The purpose of Lent is life
and light. The transformation we celebrate in
Jesus needs to occur in us and in our
interactions with our church.
On Tuesday, we come together for our soup
supper to have a lesser meal and to contribute
our sacrifice to our Haiti Nutrition Program.
Later on Tuesday, we invite you to the Church at
7:30 PM for a presentation on "Annulments". This
will be a chance to learn about ways we can
reconcile and rebuild families.
Remember the Bishop's Lenten Appeal and our
Capital Campaign in your Lenten giving.
PLEASE HELP! We need your help to keep
everything running smoothly. Please cooperate
with our parking lot attendants - they are trying
to accommodate EVERYONE! Please also remember
that we have available to us, parking at George
Mason and other close-by areas. Please DO NOT
park in areas that are not marked for parking or
that block other cars. DO NOT impede the flow of
traffic through the lot. Your movement in and
out of the lot will flow more smoothly if we all
cooperate. Thank you!
THE MISSION IS COMING!
On the weekend of March 16th and 17th the Paulists
will bring their team, Fr. Tom Ryan and Janis
Clarks, to begin our mission. Make this Lent a
time of renewal; think of others you could invite
to join you. So many are looking to deepen their
lives. Save the evenings of March 17-21. Catch
the Spirit, Pass it on.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
The Moms Ministry is sponsoring a Stations of the
Cross on Thursday, March 14th at 7:30 PM. We
invite you to join us for a quiet time of prayer
and reflection.
FASTING AND ABSTINANCE
Those 14 years of age or older are bound to
observe the law of abstinence (no meat). Those
over 18 and under 60 years
of age should observe the law of Fast (one
normal meal and two smaller ones). Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday are the only days of
Fast and Abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are
days of abstinence.
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Our special thanks to T.
A. Sullivans & Sons for their support.

S O C I A L J U S T I C E N E W S
SECOND WEEK OF LENT - In Paul's letter to Timothy,
we heard today about the purpose of "law" and
rules. As we reflect on this reading, pray for
all leaders and elected officials whose jobs
include protecting and defending the law.
Sometimes, those who are leaders use the law for
personal benefit to the detriment of the rest of
society. Because all people have the right to
participate as members of the community, it is
imperative to speak out against injustice
and to hold those who use law unjustly accountable
for their actions.
RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
Help rebuild the culture of life during this time
when the culture of death appears to have the
upper hand...
If you can't end an international crisis, you can
calm a family one.
If you can't send relief to refugees, you can
provide a meal for a shut-in.
If you can't cure anthrax, you can drive someone
to the doctor.
If you can't end abortion, you can pray at a
clinic or at home.
If you can't end war, you can love your neighbor.

LEAVING IN THE MIDDLE OF MASS?
You may have noticed a group of people leaving
after the Homily. These folks are preparing to be
fully initiated in the Catholic Church at Easter.
Since they do not receive the Eucharist yet, they
leave as a group after the Liturgy of the Word to
share more about the scriptures at Mass. Please
keep them in your prayers. If you or someone you

Catholic faith, call Michelle Miller at 703-534-

mothers, age 16-21 and have recently opened
Elizabeth House II, a scattered apartment program
to enable us to serve more homeless and at risk
teenage mothers in the Northern Virginia area. As
