St. Charles Bulletin for February 17, 2002
1st Sunday of Lent

Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Lent is time for reconciliation. An Adult
Education Series, "The Many Forms of Healing"
begins this Tuesday at 7:30 PM. Andy Rivas
from our Bishops Conferences will address
"Restorative Justice" a review of criminal and
penal justice systems in light of Catholic
Teaching. This is a must for all involved in
prison ministry. Can we find better ways of
protecting society and rehabilitating
offenders? Feb 26 will cover the topic of
Annulments. Keep our Mission Week open on
your household calendar. With Ash Wednesday
we begin a time of prayer, fast and
abstinence. Our fast and abstinence takes a
special focus at St. Charles. We will share
the money saved by our fasts with the children
of our sister parishes in Haiti. They need
funding for a school nutrition program that
helps 500 needy children.
How can you help?
1) On one evening a week, have soup or a
lesser meal for supper, using the prayer from
the Rice Bowl for Grace. Calculate the money
you might have spent had you gone out to eat
in a restaurant, and donate the difference
through Rice Bowl. 25% of this outreach to
world hunger will be reserved for our Haiti
project.
2) Come join us for the Tuesday evening Soup
Suppers in the Cafeteria, proceeds
designated for Haiti.
3) Check the Website for other Lenten
activities.
"Command that these stones becomes loaves
of bread!
ABSTAINING AND FASTING
Those 14 years of age or older are bound to observe the
law of abstinence (no meat). Those over 18 and under 60
years of age should observe the law of Fast (one normal
meal and two smaller ones). Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday are the only days of Fast and Abstinence. The
Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.
PARISH MISSION IN LENT
Just four weeks away! We invite you to set aside the
week of March 17-21 to participate in this time of
renewal. Those who have never been to a mission have a
great experience in store.
PARISH MISSION VOLUNTEERS
Pass the spirit on to St. Charles kids! We're looking
for people of all ages (middle school through elder
years) to assist with one evening of the children
programs of the Parish Mission (March 17th - 21st).
Please call Liz McChoskey (703) 237-9311 or email

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
FIRST WEEK OF LENT
In today's Gospel, we listened to the story of the
temptation of Jesus. When first tempted by the devil,
Jesus responded, "one does not live by bread alone, but
by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God."
We can begin our Lenten journey in prayer by asking that
God challenge us to listen attentively to the words of
his Son. Christ's words can spur us to action on behalf
of all people who are poor. By participating in
Operation Rice Bowl, we learn about people in need and
take action on their behalf.
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Our special thanks to Dwyer,
Service Corporation, for their support.
RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
Human cloning is an effort to create human as "copies"
of other humans. Human cloning is wrong, because it
dehumanizes human reproduction. All cloning treats
human beings as products, as mere carriers of traits
that others find useful. The effective and morally
acceptable way to prevent human cloning is to forbid its
use to make news humans in the first place. The Humans
Cloning Prohibitions Act of 2001(S. 790, H.R. 2505) will
achieve this important goal. There is information in
the back of the church, as well as on the Respect Life
webpage regarding this issue.
SCHOOL NEWS
St. Charles School Parent - Teacher Organization, (PTO),
will have a parent/teacher pot luck supper on Friday,
March 22, 2002 for grades 7th and 8th in the School
Cafeteria from 7:30 PM until 10:00 PM. Hope to see you
there!

SEPARATED? DIVORCED? WIDOWED?
Two very helpful diocesan-wide programs begin again on

of spouse.
