St. Charles Bulletin for 3-25-2001

4th Sunday of Lent

from the pastor...FROM OUR PASTOR

I bring your attention to an update included with today’s bulletin with regard to plans for our Parish Community Center. We have been busy at work with a new architect, planning for our project and doing a master plan to anticipate future facilities needs. This will insure that what we build will allow for the future upgrading and possible remodeling of current buildings in an integrated fashion. In the meantime, we have received many fresh pledges and generous payments on existing pledges. It has become clear that costs may exceed our original estimates. We will make every effort to economize without sacrificing durability. Hundreds of new parishioners who have recently joined us may be unaware of our Campaign and how they may assist. You may call the Parish Office for information. It is clear that we will be depending on a loan from the Diocese. That provides a very practical motivation for us to participate in the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal this year. Please give your diocese and your parish your first consideration as you give sacrificially during the Lenten season.

The Apostolic Nuncio, Msgr. Gabriel Montalvo, will visit St. Charles Church on Sunday, March 25, and will celebrate the Spanish Mass at 1 PM. Msgr. Montalvo is from Columbia and is the first Latin American to have been appointed Apostolic Nuncio in the United States. Prior to his appointment as Apostolic Nuncio, Msgr. Montalvo was the Director of the Pontificia Accademia Ecclesiastica in Rome.

“Christ be before me”,

Rev. Gerry Creedon

P.S. I look forward to presenting: “Everything you wanted to know about the Catholic Church and were afraid to ask!” on the First Monday of April at the Church.

EASTER FLOWERS

The Parish Office is now accepting donations for Easter Flowers. If you wish to have a loved-one remembered, please include their name with your donation. For your convenience, Easter Flower Envelopes are available at the entrances to the Church. You may drop your donation in the collection basket or stop by the Parish Office. The list of those remembered will be published on Easter Sunday

BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL (BLA)

Commitment Sunday is today. Please return your BLA pledge at Mass, or you may mail it. A few of the areas that will benefit from your support include Seminarian education, youth ministry, Catholic Charities services and the Spanish Apostolate. There are many offices, programs and needs that Bishop Loverde oversees. Your support for these areas is very important.

PLEASE NOTE:

· Infant baptisms will not be celebrated on the Easter Vigil, Saturday April 14, 2001.

SPONSOR OF THE WEEK Our Special Thanks to Utility Service Express for their support.

Respect LifeMinistry

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you; be honest anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build anyway. If you find happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you’ve got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway.

ANNIVERSARY OF ARCHBISHOP OSCAR ROMERO

March 24th marks the 21st anniversary of the death and martyrdom of Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador. Known as a pious and relatively conservative bishop at his selection in 1977. Romero underwent a profound transformation after witnessing the death of his Jesuit friend Rutilio Grande and others who were killed for their commitment to the poor and to justice. Romero’s theology took on a new depth as he came to see the church’s option for the poor as a defining characteristic of Christian faith. As we witness the continued struggle of Salvadorean people through earthquakes, social unrest and grinding poverty, let us honor one of their own. “A church that does not unite itself to the poor in order to denounce from the place of the poor the injustice committed against them is not truly the Church of Jesus Christ.”

IN OUR PARISH…

TUESDAY NIGHT LENTEN SOUP SUPPERS

During the Lenten season, St. Charles will resume the Soup Kitchens. This year we are asking the community to make their wonderful soups and breads (please bring your soups in pots ready to heat on the stove). Or, if you don’t have the time to make soup or bread, donate the cost of what you would spend to go out to eat. Soup Kitchens begin March 6th and continue through April 3rd. Soup will be served from 6 PM to 7:30 PM in the School Cafeteria. All proceeds will go to Operation Rice Bowl.

FEATURED (REQUESTED) SOUPS ARE:

  • Tuesday, March 27 – Any Vegetable Soup
  • Tuesday, April 3 – Chef’s Choice

If you would like to help with the Soup Kitchens or to donate soup, please call Jan Prisco at 703-876-1937. Each Soup Supper will include a talk to enrich our Lenten journey starting at 7:00 PM in the 6th grade classroom (around the corner from the Cafeteria).

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Next Thursday at 7:30 the MOM’s Ministry will sponsor a woman’s stations using Mary’s Way of the Cross. (this happened 3/22)

MAKE IT AN ELECTRONIC LENT

Your parish website, www.stcharleschurch.org, can help you experience a better Lent this week and choose from reflections on the daily readings, a Lenten exercise or review the list of all the Lenten activities offered by St. Charles. And if you’ve already got Lent under control, you can still visit to see recent photos, the celebrant’s schedule, the bulletin before Mass and more. The Web Team invites everyone to check out the hundreds of pages on your parish website this week and to share the web address with a neighbor.

FOR WOMEN ONLY

The Arlington Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (ADCCW) presents “Today’s Women in the Pew” on March 31, 2001 at Sacred Heart Church, with speaker Katherine Boucher on the topic of today’s Catholic woman and her issues and role in the Catholic community. In addition, the ADCCW will also present short breakout sessions in how to reach the woman in the pew. For more info, contact Virginia Berg at 703-241-1129.

LIVING STONES

Tell us your story of faith as it has happened to you at St. Charles. You are the living stones of our parish buildings. Get the guidelines at the Church entrances, and take some quiet time during Lent to write this up for a parish booklet. Your stories can be of a moment you felt guided by the Spirit or your experience in or with a ministry here at St. Charles.
