St. Charles Bulletin for 10-01-2000

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Build the Spirit Newsletter #9
(appeared as an insert to this bulletin)

from the pastor...FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear St. Charles Parishioners:

This weekend, we invite you to our Volunteer Fair. Come and learn about our ministries. Consider the gift of your time to the mission of St. Charles. I especially seek some assistance from bi-lingual volunteers who could assist with justice issues affecting the Latin American community.

On October 2, you are invited to the first of a series of presentations on “The Church and Politics”. Fr. Joe Hacala, former Director of the Campaign for Human Development will lead us on a reflection on the Bishops’ Pastoral on “Faithful Citizenship”. The church is non-partisan. We are called however, to reflect on candidates for election in the light of the sacredness of the human person and our teachings on social justice.

At the Volunteer Fair in the School Cafeteria, we will have a table for the Capital Campaign. Come join the many who have pledged their support to a New Community Center.

Peace,

FALL TEA FOR MOTHERS

The RCIA process has begun! Adults participating in RCIA have started the period of inquiry. This is the 1st step in the RCIA process where there is an emphasis on discernment and learning more about the Catholic Church. Please keep the RCIA group in your prayers during this important time. Also, we are in need of sponsors, team members and dismissal leaders for RCIA. For more information, please contact Stacy Greene at 703-522-9467 or sgreene715@aol.com.

Respect LifeMinistry

Society has a right and duty to defend itself against violent crime and a duty to reach out to victims of crime. Yet our nation’s increasing reliance on the death penalty is extremely troubling. Respect for human life must even include respect for the lives of those who have taken the lives of others. It has become clear, as Pope John Paul II has taught, that inflicting the penalty of death is cruel and unnecessary. The antidote to violence is not more violence.

Joseph Hacala, former director of the Catholic Campaign for Human development, will be on Monday, October 2 at 8:00 PM in the Church. In their pastoral, the Bishops pose ten questions and four moral priorities taken from Scripture and Catholic social teachings to guide our participation in the political process. LIFE IN HAITI

Creole is one of the main languages spoken in Haiti, so this is what the “Our Father” would look like:

Papa nouki nou sejet la,
Se pou yo respe kte non ou,
Se pou yo rekonet se ou ki wa,
Se pour volonte-ou fet sou ou tandou nou sujet la,
Peu nous bezaveu chak pou-a,
Bau nous li posi-a,
Pa done sa nou fe-ou.
Tankou nous padone se nous fe mou ki fe nous kichoy,
Peu nous bezwen cha jou a delivre ak sa ki mal nous.
Amen.

Thank you for your tithe support of our sister parishes in Gros Marin.

FRIENDS OF THE HUNGRY

Our food pantry is dwindling! We especially need pasta, pasta sauce, soup, canned vegetables and canned meats. Your generosity is helping to build the kingdom. Thank you and God bless!

IN OUR PARISH...

OKTOBERFEST 2000

Oktoberfest is less than 3 weeks away! By now you are probably going through the house looking for items for the yard sale…looking through cookbooks to see what you will bake for the bake sale… making crafts for the Krafthaus… and taking more raffle tickets into work! We are in great need for help at the Bake Sale, Yard Sale, Spaghetti Dinner, Krafthaus, Soda Booth and Moon Bounce. Please consider joining us for a few hours that day to help with any of these fun projects. You can call Mike or Sabra Flaherty at 703-920-2689, or sign up at the volunteer fair. You can find more information about Oktoberfest and yard Sale Guidelines in the back of the church.

VISIT US AT THE FAIR OR ONLINE

The Web Team, the creative bunch making www.stcharles.org possible, looks forwarding to meeting you at the Volunteer Fair. If you haven’t visited the site before, stop by our station in the cafeteria to see a demonstration. And if you are a regular visitor to our site, we’d love to find out how you feel about what we’ve planned next. Of course we’ll also welcome any budding digital photographers or web coders who want to join the Team. The Fair will also be a great chance for Ministry and Neighborhood leaders to review an update their online information. See ya at the Fair or e-mail us at webteam@stcharleschurch.org.

A STATEMENT FROM BISHOP LOVERDE’S OFFICE:

Be sure to look for the 4-part series in the Arlington Catholic Herald on “Faithful Citizenship” Using Church teaching as it’s foundation, the Herald will discuss areas that are important this election year to help the rest of our Community and nation; issues relating to immigration and refugees. It is a great opportunity to learn what the Church teaches on these subjects, and begin to form your choice for local and national elections: For a copy of the articles, see www.catholicherald.com.
