PASTORAL COUNSELING SERVICES

Our interns have begun work. See the website or last week’s bulletin for their introductions. Jean Sweeney, a licensed professional counselor and pastoral team member for 15 years, will supervise Carl Ripley and Anne Passion. This is an opportunity for you to pay attention to issues that are causing you pain and allow for a new way of seeing. The Jubilee year is a time for resolution, and new starts. Sliding scale fees are very available. Call Jean at 703 527 5500x15 to set up an appointment.

SHORT COURSE IN CHRIST – “CURSILLO”

If you are a man looking to make a Jubilee Year retreat experience, this could be the weekend for you (Sept. 28 – evening Oct. 1). Here at Missionhurst in Arlington, led by a team of laymen and priest, this would be a good time to renew your spiritual life and experience Christian community. Call Dawn Mealy or Carol Poplin at 703-892-1509 for information. Women’s weekend is November 16 – 18. Mark your calendar and register now. Our own Duffy Kiko will be a team leader on this retreat.

THANK YOU!

This bulletin is furnished to the Parish without charge. The advertisements that appear completely defray all publishing costs with which the church would otherwise be burdened. We encourage you to patronize our continuing sponsors and those that are new this year as a thank you for their kind generosity.

SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Our special thanks to Van Caffi Plumbing & Heating for their support. Thank you!

Respect LifeMinistry

We can make the process of dying easier by expertly controlling an individual’s pain and other physical symptoms, while fostering open and honest communication with them and their families. This can transform what may have been a frightening and miserable existence into a time of continuing personal growth and of completion.

-Dr. Michael Kearney, Mortally wounded

SCRIPTURE FOCUS

Jesus’ words are strong about getting caught up in what one does on the outside. Religion cannot be all externals. Jesus takes the offensive here. He adapts a quote from Isaiah about paying lip service to God with no heart. He warns them about insisting that human rules are God’s will. In fact, the book of Deuteronomy clearly says that nothing may be added or taken away from God’s law. Deuteronomy speaks of God’s law as a way to show gratitude for God’s great love. God chose and formed people freely. These laws of God are not a heavy burden or a way to win God’s love; they are simply a way to respond with love to God’s goodness. The Pharisees took God’s law seriously and followed it with devotion. But a few Pharisees forgot the heart of religion – God’s relationship with people – and got trapped in mere regulations. This passage can speak to our own lives in the Church today. -- Diocese of Monterey
