St. Charles-Bulletin 7/30/2000

from the pastor...FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear St. Charles Parishioners:

During the months of June and early July, many parishioners joined me for an update on our Community Center Campaign. We reviewed our history of the project, the need, the projected facilities, and dialogued about areas of concern. We are well on our way to raising the necessary pledges toward the estimated $3 million cost. Our current total in pledges is just over $1.5 million. To proceed toward the next step, the hiring of an architect, the Diocese requires us to have in hand, $1.2 million in cash. We have received $480,000 in new money. With our existing parish savings of close to $500,000, we will need to raise an additional $220,000 in up front money from the Campaign. Broadening the scope of participation to include most of our registered households will enable us to reach our goal. Jane McCarthy is available at the Parish Office at 703-527-5500 x26. Please be in touch with her if you wish to join in our effort, or if you have questions about the Campaign or your individual pledge.

Build the Spirit!

SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER

40 DAYS FOR PEACE IN D.C. The People’s Campaign for Non-violence, an ecumenical, faith-based coalition of groups from across the country, continues its prayers, teachings and peaceful witness calling for a culture of non-violence and justice for all of God’s creatures. Sunday, August 6, there will be a gathering at Lafayette Park to pray for an end to economic sanctions, which are devastating lives in Iraq. For further information on this and other events, visit www.forusa.org or call 202-244-0951. Continue to pray for God’s peace. Respect LifeMinistry

"Above all, society must learn to embrace once more the great gift of life, to cherish it, to protect it, and to defend it against the culture of death, itself an expression of the great fear that stalks our times. One of your most noble tasks as bishops is to stand firmly on the side of life, encouraging those who defend it and building with them a genuine culture of life."

- Ad limina address of Pope John Paul II to bishops of California, Nevada and Hawaii, Oct. 2, 1998

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

First Communion: Children who wish to receive First Communion should be enrolled in the Grade-based Sunday program or Atrium Level II. It is preferable that children have participated in at least two consecutive years of religious education to receive the sacrament. Confirmation: Youth who wish to receive the sacrament of Confirmation should either be enrolled in either On The Way or WAY. It is asked that two consecutive years of participation in religious education occur before being confirmed. Additional preparation will take place outside of On the Way and WAY. And informational meeting will be held in September. Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC): Any children and youth who would like to enter more fully into the Catholic faith either through Baptism or if over the age of 7-8, First Communion are invited to participate in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children. This program tries to support family-centered initiation into the Catholic community, since spiritual life begins at home. Members of families would join appropriate groups for their main catechesis (RCIA, WAY, On the Way, Atrium, St. Charles School, etc.) The RCIC community will meet once a month on a Saturday evening for a potluck supper to support and explain how this applies to families. For more information, please call Andrea Bender at 202-434-5319 (w) or 703-527-2476 (h).

FREEDOM ACTION

Seize the opportunity each day to lose your worries in a small act of kindness.

VOLUNTEER TEACHERS NEEDED

The grade-based (K-6) Sunday classes need volunteer teachers. If you love children and your faith, please consider helping out with religious education. Teams of two teachers will work together for each grade level. All materials are provided with the religious education textbook series. Each week, there will be a small amount of preparation time prior to class. Also, there will be three training/planning meetings during the year. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete a volunteer form (available at Church entrances and the Parish Office) or call Anne Marie at 703-527-5500 x19.

YOUTH NEWS

Youth traveling to Rome for World Youth Day leave in less than one month! We would like to thank all parishioners for their ongoing support – both spiritual and financial. For more information, call Anne Marie Kaufmann at 703-527-5500 x19.
