St. Charles-Bulletin 7/16/2000

from the pastor...FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear St. Charles Parishioners:

Last weekend, Carolyn Gretzinger, our outgoing Parish Council Chair, presented an extensive report on the ministries of St. Charles. [see: 2000 Annual Report and 2001 Integrated Goals and Objectives Report] This past academic year has been a time of historic growth and development. I want to express thanks to all who have joined Carolyn in leading our various services. I also offer a big welcome to Jim and Genie Murphy, who have stepped forward to co-lead our Parish Council. I ask your support for them and the various activities that build up the Kingdom of God at St. Charles.

This week’s bulletin contains a report from Charles Sullivan, the capable Chair of our parish Finance Committee. It indicates that we had some large, unanticipated expenditures this past year. Because of the age of our existing facilities, we have planned ambitiously for next year, so that the parish will increase its reserve fund to proactively anticipate major improvements and maintenance.

We have been able to plan generously and wisely for our current programs and facilities because of a generous increase of giving, nine percent. I thank you. This increase is especially appreciated in the light of the concurrent needs of our Capital Fund Campaign. The parish funds are entirely segregated from the Capital Campaign. However, I recognize that they both place a demand on your stewardship and support.

Let us continue to BUILD THE SPIRIT!

Rev. Gerry Creedon

P.S. Welcome, to the Haiti Priests visiting next weekend!

C’YA

July 15 C’YA takes to the river for an afternoon of whitewater rafting. Our brave leader, Larry Prikockis, arranged for this water expedition to Harper’s Ferry. For more details, please call him at 703-312-9463 or alaric@ljcp.com.

July 16 As an ongoing activity, members of C’YA have been attending the Young Adult Masses sponsored by the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. Young Adult Ministry. After the day’s Mass, there will be a potluck BBQ. So pack up something to grill and meet up at St. Charles by 4 PM.

Support Our Sponsors

Through the kindness of the sponsors that appear, this bulletin is furnished to the Parish without charge. We feel the sponsors get good coverage with their ads, and at a relatively low cost. We urge you to patronize them! Diocesan Publications has done a fine job in publishing our weekly bulletin and we hope our present sponsors renew their ads. Also, if others are interested, please contact the Parish Office on Monday at 703-527-5500.

SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Our special thanks to Philip A. Gentry, DDS, FAGD and Jeanette Coutin-Gentry, DDS for their support. Thank you!

SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER

Project Lazarus/Food Vouchers Are you aware of how much assistance St. Charles offers to families in need? Every week, we see people who have fallen behind on bills because of illness, job loss or other unexpected crises. Your generosity through Project Lazarus donations enables us to not turn away the truly needy. Are you able to give extra money during the summer, or to buy food vouchers for us to give out? Please mark all checks and food vouchers for “Project Lazarus”. Thank you!! Questions? Contact Micheline Toussaint at the Parish Office.

Respect LifeMinistry

Democracy stands or falls with the values which it embodies and promotes. … In defending life you are defending an original and vital part of the vision on which your country was built. America must become, again, a hospitable society, in which every unborn child and every handicapped or terminally ill person is cherished and enjoys the protection of the law.

- Ad limina address of Pope John Paul II to bishops of California, Nevada and Hawaii, Oct. 2, 1998
